Richie Smallwood praised City’s ambition and belief and hopes the Bantams can use high spirits to their advantage, ahead of Grimsby Town’s lunchtime trip to the University of Bradford Stadium tomorrow.

The skipper assessed the challenge of facing the FA Cup quarter-finalists, but insists his side has what it takes to break them down, and take a crucial three points.

“Our ambition is naturally spoken about amongst the players,” he said.

“We all know there is no better time to start a convincing run than now, and we play a couple of those teams around us as well.

“We know it is a critical time of the season. We will give it our best shot.

“Things can change really quickly, especially when around eight teams are after seven positions. We have to do our job and try to pick up maximum points.

“Grimsby will carry the confidence of their recent cup run. We are aware of that.

“We know how difficult they are to play as a team, given how they played against us earlier this season. That is something we will use to our advantage, and find a way to break them down.

“We know we have enough to beat them.”

City’s No.6 is enjoying the refreshing challenge of battling for promotion, and knows he can use the pressures of achieving seasonal goals to his, and City's, advantage.

The midfielder has already put the recent weekend off behind him, with a trip to Crewe Alexandra postponed, and is ready to get back to extending the Bantams’ unbeaten run.

“It is really enjoyable,” the former Hull City captain added.

“I like this position, personally: vying for promotion.

“At other times in my career, I have been fighting for survival, so it is a refreshing challenge.

“The pressures of achieving goals, like fighting to stay up, is something I can use.

“There is an expectation for us to win every game, and when teams sometimes treat playing us like a cup final, it does become admittedly difficult. We have to find a way to win.

“There is nothing we can do (about postponement). You have to put it behind you and wait for the next game.

“Ideally, you would like to play, and we all wanted to extend our run. We are back now, though, and are ready to go again.

“We have fresher minds and are looking forward to playing again, and more importantly, getting back to winning ways.”
